Our company
We met at drama school and were drawn together by a mutual passion for movement and collaboration. Early on, we took part in an intensive residential training programme in Dolgellau, Wales, led by SITI Company. We trained in the Suzuki method and Viewpoints, spending long days training in the local church hall and unwinding on the beach in the evenings. It was during one Viewpoints improvisation with Jazz, Scout & India that something clicked. The improvisation felt fluid and we knew we had found something special. When the next module called for group collaboration, Joe and Elizabeth joined us, naturally drawn in by a shared strength in movement.
The orange…
Our first piece together was strange, symbolic, and unforgettable. At the centre of it all? An orange.
As part of our training together at the Bristol School of Acting we were given a simple yet challenging task. One that sparked our interest in creating pieces together. We were given an orange and were tasked to create a piece involving it in any way we wanted. In our experimental performance, the audience was split in two. One group witnessed a ritualistic worship of the orange; the other, its chaotic destruction. When both halves were brought back together, the clash of emotional reactions sparked fascinating post-show discussions. It was our first taste of making theatre that could surprise, provoke, and linger in the mind long after the curtain call. Going forward, we knew we wanted to bring that feeling with us into everything we would later make…
Establishing our craft
This creative momentum carried into an assessed project we titled Segments — a devised piece inspired by the tension between expectations and desires – exploring societal expectations with different forms of desire going too far. Our audience was once again divided, moving through alternating A–B–A–B sequences around different spaces in the Tobacco Factory Theatres.
Rooted in our movement training, the piece was abstract, bold, and deeply collaborative. But more importantly, it marked the point where we realised we weren’t just a group of students making theatre — we were a company. And so, the name Segments stuck.
Why Segments?
Each company member brings something unique to the table — like individual segments of a whole. We are five core members with a constantly expanding network of associate artists, each one a segment of our community.
“Segments? Like the orange?” people ask. Exactly.
Our Mission & vision
SEGMENTs Company is a collective of passionate creatives dedicated to building a vibrant creative community in Bristol - one where artists and creatives can reignite their passion and find inspiration, even when opportunities are scarce. We strive to foster positive energy amidst the challenges and rejections that often come with the creative journey. Through crafting relatable, multimedia works, we aim to create work that makes people feel and connect. Our mission is to cultivate a space where creativity thrives, stories matter, and every voice contributes to a dynamic, inclusive artistic landscape.
Our vision is to create an empowering creative ecosystem in Bristol and the South West where collaboration thrives and ideas come to life. We are committed to supporting fellow creatives by providing access to resources, spaces, and connections - paying forward the opportunities and support we have received. We dream big: beginning with nurturing and helping others bring their creative visions to life, and growing into a vibrant hub where artists can fully develop and showcase their work. Ultimately, we aspire to take our own and others’ pieces to major theatres and film festivals, amplifying diverse voices on larger stages and contributing meaningfully to the wider creative community
